Family in fentanyl manslaughter case speak out

Jordan Yarmey 25, is the Edmonton man facing a manslaughter charge in relation to a fentanyl overdose death. His parents are speaking out in the hope other parents will talk to their kids about the deadly dangers of fentanyl and other opioids.

They describe the past year as a living nightmare, watching their son descend into a "downward spiral" of drug abuse. "The addiction changed him into someone we couldn't recognize" said Helen Yarmey, Jordan's mother.

Whenever his parents asked him what was going on, Jordan would say he was feeling tired or had the flu. Then, during a visit at Christmas, he couldn't hold onto a glass of water. They had never even heard of fentanyl.

One doctor told them as an adult it was up to him to deal with the issue. "That was heartbreaking for us because when you don't get help you don't know what to do" said Helen Yarmey. Yarmey will be back in court later this month.

It's expected the next step will be to set a trial date.
